Opening fast charger Gerkesklooster

The electrification of milk transport

27 June 2025

At Melkweg|Fritom, we believe logistics can be a driving force for sustainable change. On 19 June, we celebrated an important milestone together with FrieslandCampina: the official opening of a fast-charging station at the production site in Gerkesklooster. This marks the start of fully electric milk transport in the region - both literally and figuratively.

Our first electric milk collection truck (RMO) has recently hit the road, collecting raw milk from dairy farmers in the Gerkesklooster area every day. It’s a first-of-its-kind deployment that fits seamlessly into our ambition to make dairy logistics more sustainable. Operating 24/7, the truck is fully recharged in under two hours at the new charging station and ready to continue its route.

With around 30% battery capacity remaining after a 9–10 hour shift, the system is performing better than expected. Our drivers praise the comfort and quietness of the ride. And on the farms, the difference is noticeable too: “The milk truck now arrives almost silently,” note farmers.

The opening event was attended by FrieslandCampina Gerkesklooster colleagues, including project leader Folkert de Groot, as well as representatives from MilkLogistics and the Global Supply Chain. Representing Melkweg|Fritom were operational manager Hugo Rozeboom and several of our drivers - those bringing this innovation to life on the road each day.

To conclude the event, Hugo presented a small symbolic gift on behalf of Melkweg|Fritom to Folkert and the entire FrieslandCampina Gerkesklooster team. A gesture of appreciation and a shared commitment to the road ahead: the Green Journey, inspired by the Fritom Group’s broader sustainability mission.

This step is part of a bigger picture. As FrieslandCampina’s transport partner, we move over 3,600 tonnes of milk daily with a modern fleet and a close-knit team of skilled drivers. We're investing heavily in sustainable fuels such as HVO100, smart route planning, advanced systems; and now, electrification. Because if we can deliver the same quality with fewer emissions - everyone benefits.

Driving together toward a more sustainable future.
