Importing goods into the UK after Brexit? Melkweg|Fritom helps!

Liquid transport to the United Kingdom? Let us guide you the way!

Since January 1st, 2021, doing business with the United Kingdom has changed. Brexit has posed a new challenge, one that we have been preparing for since 2020.

Customs declarations

Since last year before Brexit, our office created a special team dedicated to addressing all concerns and business surrounding Brexit, including a colleague who is now a fully qualified customs consultant. Our inhouse customs department can take care of clearances, producing GDB, the application and supervision of the inspection and the BIP (inspection point).

While waiting for our permit to create customs documents, our sister company TGN|Fritom has been aiding us in the process of creating the necessary documents, once again showing the strong bonds and cooperation between the two Fritom companies.

In the meantime we received the approval for a permit that allows us to create import and export documents ourselves. Therefore we can now offer our customers full support on the customs operations. Would you like to gain more information? Click here.

Importing Goods Into The UK After Brexit

Handling products of animal origin

Over the course of the past few months we have aimed to automate as much as possible, and, as a result, the process of working with the new Brexit rulings is running smoother by the day. In addition, we have specialized in the procedures that are currently necessary for transporting animal byproducts like dairy products and animal fat from the United Kingdom to the European Union. Since the start of this year we have done successfully the clearance and handling via BIP of animal by-products for over more than 400 tankers.

Importing goods into the UK in 2022 – What to expect?

As of January 1, 2021, the United Kingdom will no longer be part of the European Community. This process is better known as the "Brexit".

This has had major consequences for the transport of goods to and from the UK. For import and export operations, customs papers have to be drawn up to properly regulate the declaration of goods. Many transport companies have outsourced this work for their clients to third parties. (Forwarding agents).

Fritom Liquid Logistics has ensured that this service is organized "in-house" and not outsourced. In the past months, clients have experienced many benefits and, above all, much peace and convenience. The employees of the customs department at the office in Bolsward assist clients in providing the correct information and taking care of the final declarations. Looking back, a 100% score was achieved in 2021 and there have been no complaints/comments.

Unfortunately, the current procedures drawn up in consultation with the UK government are not adequate. And so it has been decided to amend the rules again as of 1 January 2022.

Especially for transports that are accompanied (so with driver) a new procedure applies.

Brexit Change 2022

What will change on 1 January 2022?

After loading the truck, the data must be entered and delivered to the declarant in the UK who will make a pre-declaration. (As this is already done). The confirmation consists of receiving a unique number. This number must then be entered into the Goods Vehicle Management System (GVMS). This GVMS system is designed to enable fast and efficient movement of goods and is used many UK ports. Again, registration is confirmed with a unique number. The driver needs this number to gain access to the port area.

In short; more procedures, more actions, more controls and more communication which ultimately can lead to delays in the execution of your transports. In the past weeks the customs department of Fritom Liquid Logistics has been intensively busy preparing for this in detail. Everything for you as client!

Should you have any further questions about this, we will be pleased to help you!
